History of Jamestown Day
To coincide with the opening of the Mendenhall Plantation, the 1st annual Jamestown Day festival was held in 1994. It was sponsored by the Jamestown Business Association (JBA) to promote local businesses in Jamestown. The original festival was spread throughout the town and included activities at Town Hall, Forestdale Plaza Shopping Center and the Jamestown Center.
Through the years, the festival has grown, moved, and incorporated more rides, entertainment, and food. It has tried new names (The Ol' School Fountain Fest), has been the springboard for the dedication of the Library Commons and has honored some of Jamestown's finest citizens including Bow Stafford and Dot Miller. Most importantly, the spirit of the day has remained steadfast. It is a day for the citizens of Jamestown to come out, meet our neighbors and just plain have fun. In 2000, the JBA decided to use the festival as a means to support a scholarship fund drive to benefit the children of the Jamestown area. That year, thanks to the generosity of friends and businesses in the community, the JBA was able to give away three $1,000 scholarships. Donations and proceeds from the festival have allowed the JBA to continue this type of support for the Jamestown community.
